Here one of my unpopular rugby opinions - I am a season ticket holder and I often never miss my local club's games but I've got a bit of a confession to make - I find scrums to be utter snoozefests. When the ref blows the whistle for a scrum, it's like someone pressed pause on the action. Suddenly I've got 30 ginormous men in tiny shorts assembled into what looks like cuddle puddle. Then comes an eternity of sweaty maneuvering, butt slapping and grunting just for the chance to hook the ball back that we spectators can hardly see! I understand that the scrum is a noble rugby tradition. And who doesn't love a good testosterone-charged embrace between grown men? But half the time, the ball never even emerges and It's penalty after penalty that hardly anyone understands why... Meanwhile, us fans are left yawning into our beer and desperately trying to start Mexican waves just to stay awake. Surely there are ways to inject more pace and excitement when play needs a reset. I'd even settle for a quick game of rock paper scissors at this point haha
