Not actually sure if this is an unpopular rugby opinion but i thin kits worth the discussion. The question of transgender athlete participation in rugby has become a divisive issue. I agree with inclusivity and all but I truly don't believe Rugby is the place to include transgender athletes due to fairness and safety. I believe it’s time to discuss a compromise: creating a separate transgender category in grass roots and professional competitive rugby. Sure, the science is unclear on physiological advantages. But at high levels, small differences can be consequential. It would be crazy to think having biological men playing against women be not unfair or dangerous. Special Olympic categories provide a relevant parallel. Here, interest is welcomed but competitions cater to unique needs. For fairness and safety, rugby may require a similar reframing for transgender participation. There are no perfect options, and this is probably an unpopular rugby opinion. However, in the spirit of rugby’s values of integrity, respect and inclusion, I believe welcoming transgender players into a category of their own is a progressive path forward. It upholds safety and fairness while opening doors to welcome a community deserving of represented participation.
