Rugby is beloved around the world as a rugged, tough sport. But in some circles, a clothing-optional version called "naked rugby" or "nude rugby" has emerged and becoming a trend. While those who participate likely find it liberating, in my unpopular rugby opinion, naked rugby should not be a thing. It puts the sport in a bad light and normalizes unnecessary nudity.
Why do we need this in our sport? Removing clothing from the equation adds an unnecessary sexual element to the sport. Rugby has enough trouble already overcoming stereotypes of being hyper-masculine and aggressive without the added perception from naked versions.
Some might argue that naked rugby allows people to desexualize nudity and normalize the human body. However, true progress requires changing attitudes, not shock value in my opinion. There are better ways to promote body positivity than stripped-down full-contact team sports.
