Unpopular Rugby Opinion: There are no good rugby movies out there, not even Invictus!
As a diehard rugby fanatic, I'm going to come right out and say my unpopular rugby opinion - there's not a single truly great rugby movie.
Don't get me wrong, Hollywood has tried its best to capture the passion, grit and excitement of our beloved sport on the big screen. There have been some moderately entertaining attempts, Invictus for example. But none have done justice to what makes rugby truly special. Where are the spine-tingling, tear-jerking rugby films that plays with our emotions like watching England in the world cup? They just don't seem to exist.
The sport surely presents challenges for film. But the magic is there waiting to be channeled by the right creative vision. So here's my quick rant and message to Hollywood that no one will ever get but anyways - Stop giving us mediocre efforts like Forever Strong or even the cringeworthy Haka scene in We Are Marshall. Give us a rugby movie that captures the passion and brotherhood that makes this sport like no other! We want laughs, tears, gasps of awe, and moments of triumph as the scrappy underdogs fight their way to victory. Make us believers!
I get it that Rugby has a niche appeal globally. But great sports films are universal. The right rugby movie with universal themes and inspired execution could resonate with audiences everywhere. But we can't get there without taking some risks.
Would like to see Hollywood's finest writers, directors and producers take a chance on rugby and give us the film this sport deserves. Until then, I'll be over here watching Invictus for the 20th time while dreaming of the rugby movie that's actually worth watching. As much of an unpopular rugby opinion goes, Invictus isn't really that great of a movie to be honest...
